ABC News
Review: "Hannibal Rising"

"It's much better than I thought it would be. I'm not the kind of guy who watches these movies. I saw it with my eyes closed, and they weren't closed enough. But there are people who love it. For those that do, it's very, very scary. It's a very scary nightmare.
It also reminded me why the original was such a great film, because Anthony Hopkins was so good. If you like that kind of thing, and if you can keep your eyes open, you'll be scared."

'Hannibal' rises again in Europe

By ARCHIE THOMAS

LONDON — Upmarket slasher "Hannibal Rising" looks to carve out a decent opening in Europe this weekend while in Blighty the continued absence of "Night at the Museum" leaves the door open for "Charlotte's Web" to lure in the kids.
Despite lacking the presence of Anthony Hopkins, "Hannibal" is expected to topple last weekend's big opener "Night at the Museum" from the top of the charts in Italy.

TALK ABOUT CANNIBALIZED STORIES
The new prequel to the Hannibal Lecter saga is now a book, a movie and a sign of things to come.

BY AILEEN JACOBSON
Newsday Staff Writer

Dripping blood and morsels of human flesh, the hotly anticipated film "Hannibal Rising" opens in multiplexes across the nation this Friday.

But hey, didn't the novel about the youthful development of the world's favorite cannibal debut just two months ago? Shouldn't there be several years of "taking meetings," talking "turnaround" and arguing over screenplays before it's made into a movie? Did the producers speed-read ... and then speed-film?

Sympathy for a Devil: Hannibal, Manic Avenger
By TERRENCE RAFFERTY

EMPATHY, everybody knows, can be kind of a mixed blessing. Fine human quality though it may be, it is not obviously useful in pursuits like business and war, which seem to be shaping up as the major occupations of the 21st century. So there’s no reason, really, to be surprised that the movies (and television and commercial fiction) can now, with relative impunity, offer up the once despised psychopath — who feels no empathy — as at least a semiheroic figure, a fulfillment of one of those fantasies that grow like pesky molds in the unfinished basements of our pop-culture souls.

TENDERIZED
By SARA STEWART
NY Post

February 4, 2007 -- In the movies, there's nothing like a royally screwed-up childhood to mold a memorable character. Just ask Batman, Willy Wonka, Norman Bates . . .
Now we can add one more to that list: Hannibal Lecter, whose murderous taste for human flesh is explained - maybe even absolved, a little - in the prequel "Hannibal Rising," in theaters Friday.

HANNIBAL RISING: HANNIBAL LECTER'S ORIGIN MYTH

Source: www.boingboing.net Date: Jan 16, 2007
Hannibal Rising is Thomas Harris's latest book in his wildly successful Hannibal Lecter/Silence of the Lambs series. Harris has written precious few novels -- a thriller called Black Sunday and the four Lecter novels -- in thirty years. But for all that he's a very occasional writer, his books loom large in the popular consciousness, and with good reason. They're very, very good.
